A distillation plant is an industrial facility designed to separate and purify different components of a liquid mixture by using the principle of distillation. Distillation is a physical separation process that involves the heating of a liquid mixture to generate vapor, which is then condensed to separate the components based on their boiling points.
The basic components of a distillation plant include a feed tank for storing the liquid mixture to be distilled, a distillation column (also known as a fractionation column) that contains a series of trays or packing material where the separation occurs, a reboiler to heat the mixture to generate vapor, a condenser to cool and condense the vapor back into liquid form, and a collection vessel to store the purified components.
The liquid mixture is first heated in the reboiler and the resulting vapor rises up through the column. The column is designed to have varying temperatures and pressures at different heights, allowing components with different boiling points to separate and condense at different heights within the column. The condensed liquid is then collected in the collection vessel, where it is further processed to obtain the purified components.
